Don't be swayed by the continuing hype and hysteria concerning man made global warming... It seems that the News & Advance as well as Governor Kaine has fallen into lock step with Al Gore's mantra of manmade global warming. A recent editorial stated that "many scientists say a continuing buildup of greenhouse gases caused by human activity, including releases of carbon dioxide by burning fossil fuels, is causing the Earth to warm unnaturally". What isn't stated is that a continuing number of scientists disagree. These "skeptics" are not "nuts" but well recognized scientists from around the world and know a little about climatology.
On December 13, 2007 a group of 100 of these scientists sent a letter to Ban Ki- moon, Secretary-General of the U.N., concerning the UN Climate conference in Bali. Some scientists that initially supported the UN's IPCC position and were on the Panel, have now altered their view in the face of continuing data from NOAA and NASA satellites and ice core samples. So, in my view , it is not a "settled matter" that man made emissions are causing global warming.
Al Gore has gone around the world severely criticizing this country for not ratifying the Kyoto treaty. So let's look at what's happened since the treaty was implemented in 1997: (Source: Document # 1317 - "Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Consumption of Fossil Fuels, by Country :1990 to 2004 from US Census Bureau - The 2007 Statistical Abstract". - Emissions worldwide have increased 18.0%
- Emissions from countries that signed the treaty increased 21.1%
- Emissions from non signers increased 10.0%
- Emissions from the U.S. increased 6.6%
- Emissions from the U.S. grew slower than those of over 75% of the countries that signed Kyoto.
Even assuming, and I'm not, that manmade emissions are causing global warming, the US contribution is not where most of the improvement needs to take place, and to impose draconian regulations in this country that will have a far reaching effect on the economy is ludicrous.
Contemplate the following thought experiment. What caused the end of the last ice age? It certainly wasn't caused by man made carbon dioxide emissions - no heavy industry, no industrial revolution - so what caused it? Think about it the next time you hear Al Gore and Governor Kaine repeat their mantra.
